Proclamation for the International Day of Peace

WHEREAS, we, the Belgian Council of Religious Leaders, as people of faith, have the privilege and responsibility to uphold the shining ideals, principles and wisdom of our faith tradition; and

WHEREAS, we are living in a world of nations whose interdependence makes unity and respect for diversity priorities for survival; and

WHEREAS, global crises impel all citizens to work toward converting humanity's noblest aspirations for world peace into a practical reality for future generations; and

WHEREAS, in 1981 the United Nations proclaimed that the International Day of Peace would be “devoted to commemorating and strengthening the ideals of peace both within and among all nations and peoples”; and

WHEREAS, the United Nations expanded the observance of the International Day of Peace in 2001 to invite “all Member States, organizations of the United Nations system, and non-governmental organizations and individuals to commemorate, in an appropriate manner, the International Day of Peace, including through education and public awareness, and to cooperate with the United Nations in the establishment of the global ceasefire”; and

WHEREAS, there is growing support throughout the world for the observance of the International Day of Peace, which affirms a vision of a healthy world at peace, fosters cooperation among individuals, organizations and nations, and contributes to advancing the global movement for a culture of peace; and

WHEREAS, we recognize that religions have a major role to play in promoting peace, healing and reconciliation, and are uniquely positioned to call forth the powerful resources of prayer and meditation to bear on global issues; and

WHEREAS, the Belgian Council of Religious Leaders is committed to join with people around the world in pledging its commitment to peace, justice and interfaith harmony;

Now, THEREFORE, in active demonstration of unity, cooperation and peace, we, the members of the Belgian Council of Religious Leaders, do hereby join the United Nations to proclaim September 21, as

“The International Day of Peace”.

We urge all our members to pray for peace and engage in all appropriate observances of the International Day of Peace on 21 September, and to acknowledge this annual event in a way that builds peace within families, communities, nations and the world.
May peace prevail on earth.
